FAQs

If there hasn’t been a directive from the state to institute this budget cut, why is the University doing one?
The effects of the recession on North Carolina’s budget will become clearer in the months ahead. This is the responsible decision for the University to ensure it can meet any request made by the System or the state going forward. It is better to make these cuts now before we are further into a fiscal year, having expended even more funds.

Have there been any furloughs or layoffs at the University?
Yes, there have been some isolated furloughs and layoffs in auxiliary areas of the University (those areas not supported by general funds) and in grant-supported positions. These areas have been most affected by changes in revenue because of the pandemic.

Do you expect there to be widespread layoffs or furloughs?
The System has given institutions the ability to furlough if necessary. However, it is only one tool in the toolbox to meet budgetary constraints. It is the University’s intent to preserve jobs and income for employees whenever possible. Most employees funded through general funds will not experience furloughs or layoffs in the current fiscal year. Anyone who is affected by furloughs will be communicated with promptly and be given important information regarding next steps by HR.
