About the Associate Vice Chancellor

Gary W. StinnettGary W. Stinnett

Gary Stinnett has served as associate vice chancellor for human resources and university affirmative action officer at UNC Charlotte since 1996.

His department of 35 employees is responsible for directing campus HR programs in support of over 3,500 staff and faculty and 29,000 students. Departmental functions include recruitment and employment, position classification and salary administration, employee relations, professional learning and development, benefits administration, human resources information systems, on-campus student employment, and equal opportunity /affirmative action. 

Prior to joining UNC Charlotte, he completed a career on active duty in the U.S. Army. At the time of his retirement from the Army and transition to Charlotte, his last assignment in the Army was as Adjutant General, United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

A native of Lawton, Oklahoma, he received his bachelor's degree in education and commission as a second lieutenant through ROTC from the University of Oklahoma. While on active duty, he later earned his master's in organizational behavior/human relations, also from the University of Oklahoma. 


Q: What do you like most about your job at UNC Charlotte?
A: I like being a "builder," collaborating and contributing to the fast growth and evolution of a very dynamic university with an emerging state and national reputation.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus? 
A: I love the football stadium because just a few short years ago, it was recreational fields.

Q: What inspires you in your career?
A: I enjoy seeing our employees personally and professionally develop and reach their potential.
